An explosion at a restaurant in Somalia's capital killed six people.

An explosion at a seaside restaurant in Mogadishu killed six people on Friday, an ambulance official said.

Aamin Ambulance Service director Abdikadir Abdirahman said they had carried six dead and seven injured civilians.

Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, telling Reuters they were targeting "apostate government security officers and politicians."

Al Shabaab frequently bombs Mogadishu and other cities in its war against the country's central government.

Years of struggle to overthrow the central government and establish its own strict interpretation of Islam's Sharia law.

Security and government officials frequented the Pescatore Seafood Restaurant in Mogadishu's south.

It was not known if any high-ranking officials or security personnel died or were injured.
