California's population fell for the second year in a row in2021, state officials said Monday, due to a decline in births and immigration and an increase in deaths and emigration.

Its population of 39.185 million people puts it far ahead of second-place Texas's 29.5 million.

In2018, California lost 117,552 people, bringing its population back to roughly where it was in 2016.

It was already slowing due to baby boomer retirement, younger generations having fewer children, and people moving out of state.

Its natural growth— more births than deaths — and strong international immigration had more than made up for it.

In2020, the pandemic killed tens of thousands more people than expected due to natural causes, a category demographers call “excess deaths.”

Travel restrictions and limited visas from the federal government slowed international immigration.
