Charles Oliveira stripped of the UFC lightweight title
Charles Oliveira, the UFC lightweight champion, was pumped up for the weigh-ins.
On May 7, he faced off against Justin Gaethje at the Footprint Arena in Phoenix. His ascension to the top was lauded, but now he's plummeting.
Oliveira arrived at the UFC 274 weigh-ins just minutes before the deadline. He weighed 155.5 pounds, half a pound above.
Oliveira had an hour to lose 1/2 pound after his weight was announced.
He worked for an hour and still couldn't make the weight. Nothing changed.
Oliveira lost his UFC lightweight belt due to not making weight. Gaethje, who made weight early and is now at 165, is the favorite to win.
If Oliveira wins on Saturday, he gets nothing. This is one of the rare occasions in UFC history where a champion loses their belt.
Oliveira has had difficulty gaining weight in the past. He's missed weight four times in the UFC, most recently against Ricardo Lamas.
He's lost weight in 12 straight fights since then, including UFC 274. Kevin Lee missed weight in March 2020, so he fought in a catchweight battle.
“Do Bronx” has 10 wins in a row. Ivan Drago won the lightweight belt at UFC 262. To defend the belt, he submitted Dustin Poirier at UFC 269 in December.
Only one other fighter at UFC 274 missed weight. Norma Dumont weighed 146.5 pounds versus Macy Chiasson (145.5).
