Lauren Bernett, a sophomore student-athlete at James Madison University, died today.
Bernett, 20, a softball player at Virginia University, died on Tuesday. The cause of death was not disclosed.
“Our hearts ache hearing of the loss of one of our student-athletes,” wrote President Jonathan Alger and Director of Athletics Jeff Bourne in a joint letter to the JMU community.
“Lauren Bernett was a great ambassador for JMU and our athletics programme. Last year, she was our 2021 Women's College World Series catcher.”
The Rockingham County, Virginia Sheriff's Department could not be reached for comment.
According to her JMU bio, Bernett was from McDonald, Pennsylvania, and majored in biology.
