They deserved a warm glass of red wine after qualifying for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, given the number of times they were asked to wave red flags during a torturously slow and rain-affected session.

While Red Bull's Max Verstappen earned "pole position" by the end of the day, the format's structure dictates that his pole only counts for Saturday's sprint race, which determines the literal pole for Sunday's GP.

Verstappen edged Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and McLaren's Lando Norris.

But for Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes, the rain, the flags, and the wretched format paled in comparison to the agony of their Imola performance, which was their worst in nearly a decade.

Hamilton finished 13th, with teammate George Russell 11th. They were unlucky in that the rain prevented them from improving in Q2, but their car had a severe case of the porpoising that has plagued them all season

After the race, Hamilton was seen arguing with team principal Toto Wolff in the Mercedes garage, and was seen being unusually critical of his performance.

ā€œIt was a disappointing session,ā€ he said. Team-wise, we struggled today. Things we should have done but didn't. Work hard, but every weekend is a rescue.ā€
